Sinus Lift/Augmentation Procedures
Before and After Sinus Lift Surgery
Istanbul Turkey Dental Clinic

In the upper posterior region of the jaw, there are anatomical maxillary sinus spaces. These areas become crucial when implants need to be placed just below them. In cases of early tooth loss or prolonged edentulous periods after tooth extraction, these air spaces can sag downward due to the effects of gravity and occupy the jawbone area.

In a session where implants will be applied, this space can be pushed upward using a special technique for sinus floor elevation and filled with bone graft, providing space for implantation.

Sinus lift surgery is divided into open or closed methods. In the closed method, a specialized hand tool is inserted through the socket prepared for the implant, while in the open method, a window is created inside the mouth to access the space.

In most cases, with the technology and knowledge available today, implants can be placed in the same session as sinus surgery. Even in cases where the sinus membrane is damaged or the sinus structure is anatomically challenging, all procedures can be performed in a single session.

In rare cases, if only sinus surgery is performed and the implant cannot be placed at the same time, a healing period of approximately 6 months is required for the sinus area.

What Are the Types of Sinus Lift Procedures?

There are two main methods commonly used for sinus lift procedures. These methods include:

  • Open Sinus Lift: In this method, a window is created inside the mouth to access the sinus cavity. The sinus floor is gently lifted, and bone grafts are placed.
  • Closed Sinus Lift: In this method, a specialized hand tool is inserted through the socket prepared for the implant to lift the sinus floor, and bone grafts are placed.

Both sinus lift methods are effective for increasing bone volume. The choice between them depends on the patient’s condition and preference.

What Should Be Considered Before and After Sinus Lift Surgery?

Before and after sinus lift surgery, the following considerations are important:

  • Before Sinus Lift: The patient’s general health should be evaluated. Bone condition should be assessed through X-rays or imaging tests. Medications required before and after the lifting procedure should be determined. Unhealthy habits like smoking should be avoided. Strict adherence to hygiene rules is crucial before the surgical procedure.
  • After Sinus Lift: It is essential to follow the doctor’s instructions. Pay attention to normal side effects such as swelling and bleeding. Proper oral hygiene during the healing period is essential. In some cases, activities that create pressure differences (diving, air travel) should be avoided as recommended by the doctor.
